Kemp Inks Deal with Texas Rangers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior right fielder Joe Kemp signed a contract with the Texas Rangers organization on Wednesday and will head to Arizona next week to begin his professional baseball career. The Rangers selected Kemp in the 42nd round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.

"This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid," said Kemp. "I worked so hard in college to get to this point, and I'm just excited to get the opportunity to go play with the Rangers.

Kemp will start at extended spring training in Arizona. After that, he will head to Spokane, Wash., to play in the Northwest League for the Spokane Indians. The Indians are the Class A Short-Season affiliate of the Rangers.

"Joe has been a solid baseball player at Indiana," said Indiana head coach Bob Morgan. "He has been the most feared hitter in our line up, and he put together his best season this past year. We wish him well in his professional career, and we feel he will do very well."

May 11, 2005 - Indiana senior right fielder Joe Kemp has been selected co-Big Ten Player of the Week for the period ending May 9, the league office announced on Tuesday. The honor is the third of Kemp's career and his second this season.

In four games against Michigan State, Kemp hit an astounding .600 (9-for-15) with two homers, 11 RBI, nine runs, two triples, two doubles, one steal and a 1.400 slugging percentage. The senior hit for the cycle for the first time in his career in Friday's 15-2 win.

He also propelled the Hoosiers to the series victory with one home run, three hits, three RBI and three runs in Monday's series finale.

On the offensive side, Joe Kemp led the way going 4-of-5 with a career-high five RBI. Kemp homered in the second, tripled in the fourth, doubled in the seventh and singled in the eighth.

April 24, 2005 - Two Riverdale alums figured in the South Atlantic Conference Championship over the weekend.  Greg Morgan, Jr. was 2 for 6 (.333) with a double for Lenoir Rhyne in two games.  George Hanger went 9 for 29 (.310) with a double and 8 RBIs, helping Tusculum capture the crown.  Hanger was also named to the second team All-Conference as a DH.

April 23, 2005 - NWSCC, in a DH sweep over Snead State, Justin McClanahan was 5 for 7 with 2 doubles, a home run and 6 RBIs.  Mike Clark hurled a complete game in the nightcap, allowing only two runs for his fourth victory against two defeats.

April 16, 2005 - Joey Donahue went 7 for 9 with 2 doubles and 8 RBIs in a three-game sweep over Emmanuel College.  Joey raised his average to 404 for the season.

April 13, 2005 - Bubba Nelson recorded his fourth save in as many attempts for the Reds AA affiliate, Chattanooga Lookouts.  Bubba has not allowed a run over five innings, while striking out six and holding opposing batters to a .188 average.

April 11, 200 - Adam Donahue pitched three innings, allowing only one run to notch his third victory against one defeat.  In the same game (vs Cumberland JV), Justin McClanahan went 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBIs

March 29, 2005 - Bill Maugeri (03), Naval Academy Midshipman 4/C, hit a game winning RBI single against Georgetown University.

March 30, 2005 - Joe Kemp was 3 for 6 with a double and a homer in a victory over Shawnee State.

March 26, 2005 - In a three game series against Reinhardt College Joey Donahue was 7 for 12 (583) with 4 doubles and 6 RBIs.

March 12 - 20, 2005 - On a spring trip to Florida, over a seven game span in which the Hoosiers went 6-1, Joe Kemp was 12 for 28 (.429) with three doubles, two home runs, eleven RBIs and two stolen bases.  Joe also scored 14 times for IU.

March 17 - 2005 - Justin McClanahan was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs for NW Shoals in a 10-0 victory over Snead State.  Justin's 400 batting average leads the Northern Division of the Alabama Community College Conference.

March 12 & 13, 2005 - In a big weekend conference three-game sweep by Tusculum over Lenoir Rhyne, two Riverdale alums played key roles.  Gregg Morgan Jr was 3 for 9 with a double and 3 RBIs for LRC, while George Hanger was 5 for 9 with a double and 4 RBIs for Tusculum.  Tusculum remains tied with Carson Newman for the conference lead at 6-0, while LRC drops to 2-4.

March 8, 2005 - Joey Donahue went 3 for 4 with a solo HR in a victory over Benedict College.

March 12, 2005 - Senior Joe Kemp led a 12-hit attack with three hits in four at-bats in addition to four RBI, one run, one steal and his third home run of the season in a Hoosier victory over Bowling Green.

January 2005 - the Annual High School Issue of Collegiate Baseball featured a list of players to watch - named Brian Richardson and Mike Kauffman, Riverdale Seniors, to the Top Players List.

March 9, 2005 - George Hanger went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI in the first game of a double-header sweep for Tusculum over North Greenville.  George added a 1 for 2 night-cap to raise his season average to 373.

March 9, 2005 - Matt Lawrence had successful Tommy John surgery and is looking forward to coming back strong next season.

March 6, 2005 - Will Frazier went 4 for 5 with a double, a homer and 5 RBIs for MD in a slug-fest 13-12 loss to Va Tech.

March 5, 2005 - Max Parks went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs for Alabama Southern in a victory over Enterprise-Ozark.

March 3, 2005 - Mike Clark pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 runs to pick up his third win against no loses on the year for NW Shoals.

March 2, 2005 - Joe Donahue went 4 or 5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs in a victory over Edward Walters.

March 1, 2005 - Indiana senior outfielder/pitcher Joe Kemp (00') has been selected the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 27, the league office announced on Tuesday. The honor is the second of Kemp's career.

March 2, 2005 - Gregg Morgan, Jr ('03), starting right fielder for Lenoir Rhyne College is having a good year leading his team to a 12-6 record (as of 1 Mar) and is batting .345 with 4 doubles, 2 triples, 3 stolen bases.

February 22 - 27, 2005 - Joe Kemp led Indiana to a 3-1 record opening the 2005 campaign. He closed out the four-game stretch batting .353 (6-for-17) with two home runs, seven RBIs and five runs scored. Additionally, Kemp returned to the mound for the first time since the 2002 season and tossed a scoreless inning of relief in the Hoosiers' season-opening victory over DePauw on Feb. 22, and earned the win against Memphis on Feb. 26.

February 19 & 20, 2005 - Naval Academy Midshipman 3rd Baseman Bill Maugeri went 5-13 in a 4 game series against Savannah St, Villanova and Va Tech, batting .385 with 2 doubles (against Villanova), 2 RBI's and 5 runs scored.

February 20, 2005 - In a three game series against Faulkner, Justin McClanahan, Northwest Shoals, went 7 for 11 with 3 doubles, a HR and 3 RBIs.  Justin leads the North Division of the ACCC with a .560 batting average.

February 19&20, 2005 - Gregg Morgan, Jr. was 9 for 16 over a four game weekend series, raising his overall batting average to .358.  Lenoir Rhyne won all four games, beating Bloomfield and Bluefield State in double-headers.

February 17, 2005 - Mike Clark pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 ER for Northwest Shoals CC, against Alabama Southern to go 2-0 after two starts.

February 15, 2005 - Justin McClanahan, Northwest Shoals CC Freshman, was three for three with a double and four RBIs in a victory over Columbia State

February 15, 2005 - Adam Donahue, Northwest Shoals CC Freshman, has pitched three scoreless innings over two appearances.

February 12, 2005 - Mike Clark, Northwest Shoals CC Sophomore, started and pitched four innings, picking up a win in NWSCC's opening game

February 7, 2005 - Greg Morgan, Jr. was 4 for 13 in Lenoir Rhine's season opening four game series for a .308 average.

February 6, 2005 - Matt Lawrence pitched the final two innings in scoreless fashion, facing the minimum six batters
for Belhaven U in a victory over Thomas U.

January 31, 2005 - Joe Donahue, '01, Brewton-Parker, was 5 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs in a 15-0 rout of Savannah College of Art and Design.

January 23, 2005 - Shortstop Joe Donahue went 2 for 5 in a season opening, extra-inning loss to NAIA fourth ranked Embry-Riddle.  Donahue helped stake Brewton-Parker to a 2-0 lead with a first inning bunt single.

January 14, 2005 - George Hanger, Senior at Tusculum College, was named to the second team All-South Atlantic Conference.  See article HERE.

November 8, 2004 - Senior Joe Kemp led the Crimson to a three-game sweep over the Cream in the Indiana University fall practice wrap-up. Kemp was 7-for-12 with eight RBI and six runs scored in the series.

October 2004 - Adrian Dorsey has been named a volunteer assistant coach at Georgia State. Dorsey will coach outfielders.

October 3, 2004 - Playing for the Naval Academy Gold Team, Midshipman 3rd Baseman Bill Maugeri blasted a double driving in two runs against Catholic University in a fall game.

September 11, 2004 - Max Parks rips a double off the 385' sign in Alabama Southern's first fall game against Gulf Coast. Max later rips a toe nail off, fouling a ball off his foot...We know you'll play through the pain Max!

August 30, 2004 - Chris Cooper hurled two scoreless innings right around the corner at PG Stadium, earning his fifth win against one loss for the Akron Aeros. Chris' ERA stands at 2.01 after his victory over the Baysox.

August, 2004 - Joe Kemp was named the Harrisonburg Turks MVP and captured the Shenandoah Valley League batting title with a .397 average, leading the Turks to the Southern Division championship. The Bowie, Md., native was also selected to the All-Valley team by the media. Kemp finished tied for third in the league with 59 hits, fourth with 38 RBI and fifth with 34 runs scored.

July 17, 2004 - Joe Kemp was 4 for 6, including a three-run homer to lead the Harrisburg Turks to victory in a Shenandoah Valley League game (summer collegiate). Joe also represented Harrisburg in the league All-Star game, playing first base and going 1 for 2.

July 7, 2004 - In his fourth appearance for Provo, Mike Sweeney recorded his first professional strikeout. Mike hurled a scoreless ninth against the Ogden Raptors.

Also, Chris Cooper blew a save by giving up the tying run in the top of the ninth against Reading. But the Aeros scored in the bottom of the inning, giving Chris his first AA victory.

June 28, 2004 - Making his first start since being sent down to AA Chattanooga, Bubba Nelson pitched seven strong innings, allowing one earned run to record a win.

June 2004 - Chris Cooper promoted from single A Kinston Indians to AA Akron Aeros and hurls a scoreless inning with two Ks in his debut.
